Our Process Jack Daniel's Old No. 7 -- also known as Jack Daniel's Black Label -- starts with the finest corn, rye, and barley, combined with natural limestone spring water. A bit of starter mash from a previous batch is then added. This use of starter mash is the reason Jack Daniel's is called a sour mash whiskey. The whiskey then slowly drips through 10 feet of hard sugar maple charcoal, resulting in its distinctive smoothness. This extra step of charcoal mellowing is what distinguishes Jack Daniel's as a Tennessee Whiskey, rather than a bourbon. Finally, the whiskey is matured in handcrafted, charred white oak barrels until our tasters determine it is ready. The outcome is a smooth and complex whiskey with a beautiful amber color and a delicate balance of sweet and oaky flavors.

Our Story In 1864, Jasper Newton Daniel, more commonly known as Jack, introduced the world to Old No. 7, his signature charcoal-mellowed Tennessee Whiskey. This old-time process was learned from Nearest Green, an enslaved man who became Jack's first Master Distiller. As Jack Daniel insisted, Old No. 7 has been made the same way ever since. Through dedication to quality, the Jack Daniel's brand has transformed from a little-known regional whiskey to an American icon.
